Q: Organize Favorites dialog in IE displays a "Red X" mark

A: If you have this problem, there can be 3 reasons for that:

1. Missing Shell Name Space registration.
Login as Administrator and type in the Command line the following:
regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

shell name space

2. Shell Name Space disabled via Manage Add-ons dialog (XP SP2)

If the Shell Name Space add-on was accidentally disabled via the Manage Add-ons dialog (XP SP2), re-enable the add-on.

Here is the add-on description:
Shell Name Space
{55136805-B2DE-11D1-B9F2-00A0C98BC547}
ActiveX Control
shdocvw.dll

To launch the Manage Add-ons dialog, follow these steps:
Start Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Manage Add-ons.

manage add-ons

Click the name of the add-on [Shell Name Space]

Click Enable, and then click OK.

enable favorites

3. Recent IE cumulative update
If you first saw the problem with favorites after installing the MS05-052 - cumulative update for Internet Explorer, download the following VBScript – olereg.vbs - and run the file.
